SIMBA ANTI-VIOLENCE OUTREACH

The Tayshana Chicken Murphy Foundation (TCMF) is be partnered with the Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence (OPGV) to deploy prevention/intervention strategies and trauma reduction services in an identified area that does not have a CMS site and is still experiencing high rates of shooting incidents. To address the inter-generational divide between Manhattanville and Grant housing developments, which resulted in two murders, in June 2014, the NYPD implemented the largest gang takedown in the city’s history. 40 young men were arrested on a 103-person indictment in relation to the murders and longstanding territorial conflict. Years later, the feuding developments are still experiencing pockets of violence by a new generation of young people that may not have been engaged in violent behavior if the sweep had not transpired. TCMF has assembled a group of outreach workers deployed in Manhattanville and Grant Houses to promote public safety, build relationships, gather information and mediate conflicts in an effort to prevent violence. The goal is to reduce and prevent shooting incidents through providing a swift, coordinated response to the immediate incident of crisis while minimizing the likelihood of retaliation in Manhattanville and Grant houses.

2018 BALL N PEACE CITYWIDE SHOWCASE

The Ball N Peace Citywide Basketball Showcase is a round robin tournament including four (4) young women’s teams playing in honor of Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy and the other young people who have lost their lives to senseless violence. The purpose of the tournament is to showcase athletics with artistic talent to promote peace and exposure for the youth.
The showcase is played in two (3) different boroughs (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens) at two (2) different venues that were essential in Tayshana's development in her gift of basketball. At the time of her passing, Tayshana Murphy was ranked #16 girls basketball player in the nation.
We begin the tournament in Brooklyn during the 1st week of August at Sternberg Park (aka Lindsay Park). The round robin tournament will continue for 3 days. We then travel to Manhattan or Queens for the Championship game at a location to be determined.
We have multiple performances by youth organizations during halftime of all the games. In between games we conduct tributes to families that are still striving to move forward after the loss of their loved ones. We hosted the Ball N Peace Championship Game at Queens Bridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens in August 2017. We have hosted the Ball N Peace All Star Game at Dunlevy Milbank Center in Harlem, New York in August 2015 and August 2016. We also hosted our Ball N Peace All Star Game in conjunction with the New York Liberty at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey in August 2013.

We are inviting parents and relatives that lost family members due to senseless gun violence. Our foundation volunteers will help coordinate bringing families to the event and setting up the venue. The event will also include vocal and dance music performances inspiring peace and community service award presentations.
